A brutal sequence of cold, heat and drought is forcing gardeners, horticultural institutions and entire industries to rethink what blooms where — and whether traditional summer gardens can survive.

Institutions Planning for Permanent Scarcity

In Pennsylvania, a long-running sunflower festival was scrapped entirely this summer after drought combined with deer damage wiped out the crop before it could bloom, echoing the disappointment felt in Suffolk. Japan, too, is forecast to see another summer of above-normal temperatures nationwide, with its meteorological agency flagging knock-on effects for crop growth alongside the now-familiar heatstroke warnings.
Gardening for a New Reality
What emerges from this is not a single freak year but a pattern hardening into a new normal: springs too wet or too cold for plants to establish, followed by heat and drought too extreme for them to bloom on schedule. For gardeners, the implications are profound. Leaning into drought-tolerant planting, rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse is no longer a niche eco-gardening tip — it is basic survival strategy. For institutions like the RHS, it means retrofitting some of the country’s most cherished gardens for scarcity.
